Meet Our Storytellers

Storytelling is one of humanity’s oldest traditions.

Long before books filled library shelves, stories lived in the voices of storytellers. They preserved history, shared wisdom, made people laugh, and ensured that people and places would never be forgotten.

We’ve spent years discovering Beaufort’s stories.

Somewhere along the way, we discovered they’re best told by a pirate.

John Blackwater, Mary Read, Anne Bonny and Captain Barefoot may be the best known among our storytellers, but every guide shares the same calling: to bring Beaufort’s history, legends, and mysteries to life through the timeless art of storytelling.

No two storytellers are exactly alike.  (continued on next page)

Each brings their own personality, perspective, and style.

But every one of them shares the same purpose:

To help you discover the Beaufort that most visitors never see.

Port City Tour Company, celebrating its 25th year, is a professional cultural entertainment company steeped in research and education. We bring to life the stories and traditions of maritime lore in Beaufort and on the Carolina coast through tours, Escape Rooms, plays and other media, employing a diverse, well-trained group of guides and performers that bring large numbers of people to Beaufort and the Crystal Coast year-round.

Our traditions are those of the Storyteller, expressed through this excerpt from an anonymous poem: We are the chosen. Called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again. All tribes have one. We have been called, as it were, by our genes. Those who have come before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves.
